Student Publishing

An active English Department deserves its own periodical to showcase the work of students and staff, and the UvA has seen a number of thriving publications over the years. Writer’s Block was founded in 2007 by then-student Lester Hekking. By 2013 it was still going strong under the editorship of students Nora van Arkel and Robert Steltenpool.
The magazine is the go-to place for university students who aspire to become writers. Short stories and poems are published in every edition as well as interviews with members of the faculty and students, and film and book reviews. The University of Amsterdam has supported this successful student project by providing funding, and faculty help by promoting the publication.
